? Is funding available for defibrillators??

When we run our first aid training courses we are often asked whether funding is available for defibrillators?

Defibrillator

On virtually every first aid course run by Orangebox Training Solutions Limited a core piece of content is Cardiac Arrest CPR and how to use an AED. The reason for this is the importance AED (defibrillator) use in saving lives.

?270 children die in the UK every year after suffering a Sudden Cardiac Arrest at school.
?Based on European data, it is estimated that there is approximately 60,000 Out of Hospital Cardiac Arrests occur every year in the UK.
?In England alone, the Ambulance Service attempts resuscitation in around 30,000 OHCA cases, annually approximately 80% of Out of Hospital Cardiac Arrests occur at Home; 20% will occur in public places.
?Without immediate treatment, 90-95% of Sudden Cardiac Arrest victims will die
?If a defibrillator is used and effective CPR is performed within 3-5 minutes of cardiac arrest, their chance of survival increases from 6% to 74%.
?Only 22% of people in the UK would be confident in performing CPR on a stranger.
A defibrillator needs, ideally, to be used within the first 3-5 minutes of collapse.

This is why many places with a high footfall; bus and railway stations, shopping centres, sports grounds now have AEDs in situ.

Larger businesses with large work sites should also consider purchasing an AED, particularly if they have older or ‘at risk’ employees or customers. To see how an AED works (and how simple it is to use) watch our video.

But is there funding for AEDs? After a little research there currently appears to be a couple of potential funding sources, www.bhf.orh.uk, BUT this funding is for rural and / or public access AEDs, or those used by community groups. Schools will not be allowed to access this funding but companies like www.handonheart.org can offer school discounts or fundraising help.
